Utah State Library Holds First of Many Regional Meetings

On October 17, nine of 10 library directors in the Cache Valley region met with the State Librarian and their two consultants to discuss local library interests, and enhance the communication and collaboration among directors and USL.

The Utah State Library (USL) celebrated its 50th anniversary with a gala event hosted by Governor Jon Huntsman, Jr. and First Lady Mary Kaye Huntsman at the Governor’s Mansion on September 13, 2007. The State Library began in the Governor’s Mansion horse stables a half century ago and has now progressed into a statewide cutting edge library system with bookmobile service, an online library, state-of-the art technical systems and programs for the blind and disabled.

Fairview Bookmobile Library is offering free computer training for adults. If you have things you don’t understand about computers, e-mail, the internet, etc., sign up to attend this introductory skills class. The class will be adapted to your needs and designed to give you a chance to learn some basic skills to help you to feel more comfortable at the computer.

Fall 2007 LSTA Competitive Grant Round is now open

The Utah State Library is announcing the availability of $300,000 for the competitive LSTA sub-grant program Fall Round.

Grant projects can be funded in any one of these three areas: enhanced access to library services, digitization, and technology infrastructure.

There are two different funding categories within these three areas. Mini-grants are available for up to $10,000 with a 10% required local match. Regular grants with a 30% required local match are available for $10,001 up to $100,000 maximum. In each funding category, 5% of the required local match can be “in-kind”.

LSTA grants are available to all certified Utah public libraries, institutional, academic, and research libraries, and school library media centers who meet the eligibility requirements.

ASSISTANT LIBRARY DIRECTOR

Utah State Library (USL) seeks highly motivated and energetic ASSISTANT DIRECTOR, who reports to the USL Director (State Librarian). Incumbent will manage internal USL operations, including day to day division operations, budget oversight and program development and management. Other duties include management of the Library Development Program, including supervision of staff, performing consulting duties with various libraries; grant writing review and evaluation, overseeing subordinate personnel, including development of performance management plans and conducts performance appraisals. Qualifications: Masters Degree in library science from institution approved by American Library Association and demonstrated administrative ability.

Link Between Student Achievement and School Libraries

Washington, DC USA July 02, 2007 --- The U. S. National Commission on Libraries and
Information Science (NCLIS) has announced the reauthorization of the No Child Left Behind Act
(NCLB). During a Commission meeting, held in June 2007 in Washington, D.C., the Commission
addressed the clear link between school library media programs and student achievement.
